Programming: Music/Filk
Check out the main programming page for all the programming offered at this
year's convention. All of the Music/Filk events are in the Lakeshore room.
MuseCon Musician Bios
Here are some of the people who have confirmed their attendance this year.
Peter Alway
Peter Alway is an Adjunct Professor (that's Latin for part-time
burger-flipping professor) of astronomy living in Ann Arbor, Michigan,
teaching a couple 'burbs over at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, and is an
amateur astronomer at heart. He's also the author of four books on
rocketry for modelers, and even holds half a patent (shared with his
brother Bob) on a clever model rocket glide recovery system. But he's best
known in fandom for being incapable of playing a musical instrument with
more than four strings, and he is frequently seen in filk circles
strumming dulcimers, ukuleles, and the unfortunate progeny of those
instruments with rogue banjoes. His long-term goal is to master the
banjukedulcikazoodion to woo the woman of his dreams.

Eric Coleman
Eric has a degree in sarcasm from the University of Southern North Dakota
at Hoople. He has proved repeatedly on stage that he is an expert on
gerbil manipulation (except for the Osmond and Sugar Incidents, he doesn't
like to talk about those, so make sure to ask him). He is the voice of
reason in Toyboat, and if that doesn't frighten you, you have watched too
many Wes Craven films. Or maybe too many Doris Day movies, not the ones
made before she was a virgin, the later ones. For more accurate
information, good luck, but you might want to try eric-coleman.com

Travis Clemmons/Duryea Edwards
Travis Clemmons is a well known author and storyteller who occasionally
masquerades as a filker. During the past decade, he has been a featured
guest at many conventions in the Midwest. In 2009, he was the Masquerade
MC at Marcon and the Toastmaster at Context. His edgy erotic short story
"The Senator's Perfect Wife" was recently published in the
anthology "Surprise" which is for sale on Amazon.com. ( www.racypages.com)

Teresa Gunderson
Born in Southern Missouri in the 60's, Teresa learned to love music of all
varieties and nurtured a very friendly jealousy of a friend who played
standup bass in a bluegrass band. The only dream Teresa has carried with
her from childhood is a desire to sing and make music, and she waited
until she was past 40 to try to make that dream come true. Luckily she is
surrounded by music and supportive musicians, especially her husband,
gundo.

Betsey Langan
Betsey has been participating in music for most of her life, including
school, college, and community choruses (including the Case Men's Glee
Club). Although primarily a vocalist, she plays recorder and has dabbled
in guitar, flute, and keyboard. She currently performs as a member of the
Naperville Chorus. Betsey discovered filk over a decade ago (my, how time
flies!), and has been enjoying it whole-heartedly ever since, attending
local and regional housefilks, as well as filking at conventions. She has
been involved, at one time or another, with the running of filk at Duckon,
Windycon, and Capricon. Although she performs (sometimes) in circles, and
on stage as a member of Howlin' Beagle, this is her first solo appearance.

Elliott Mason
Elliott Mason has been filking for over a decade, and making things with
his hands for three times that long. He's a student, a craftsman, a
parent, and a harmony slut who'll sing anywhere, anytime, with anyone ...
for free! He blogs at livejournal
as 'almeda'.

Alyse Middleton
Alyse started playing "music" when she tried to reach the keys
on her grandmother's piano. When she finally got tall enough to reach both
the peddles and keys at the same time she actually started producing
something that other people might term music. Since then she has played
flute, bounced off three types of saxaphone and settled on guitar because
its easier to sing along with than a flute, and easier to take on the
train than a piano. Alyse divides her time between music and the 450,000
different kinds of crafts that she does including knitting, spinning and
dyeing yarn.

Jason Neereenberg
He slices, he dices, he chops... All this and he reads too! Jason has been
a science fiction addict since the 3rd grade, and a computer game addict
for nearly as long. Add to that a love of post-apocalyptic world-building
and you have the bright spot of cheeriness that Jason always brings to the
filk room. Jason plays guitar, sings, and plays bass for a filk-rock band
named Toyboat. Additionally, he teaches high school math, practices
martial arts, and lives in a tiny apartment with his wife, several
guitars, and more books than he would like to count.

Mike Nixon
Rumored to be related to the Buddha, Mike Nixon has insisted that he
doesn't play guitar for years. As far as we can figure, this is more of
Mike's attempt to spread the sound of one guitar clapping. Not only does
he play a mean guitar, but he has some wicked parodies that he'll be
performing here at Musecon.
|
Michael Pereckas
Michael Pereckas, also known as "Beige Alert" on the Internet,
discovered filk in 1991 at Chambanacon. He bought a guitar in early 2002
and by the end of the year was terrifying audiences and most of all
himself. It was around that time he also resumed playing flute, having
previously played it in high school and college bands. Michael likes to
bring the unusual to the filk circle, and particularly enjoys bringing
songs from far away to new places. He is also an avid photographer and has
many photos, including many from cons, up on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/beigephotos/
|
Bill Roper
Bill Roper discovered filking at the 1976 Worldcon and has been busy
writing songs ever since. Capable of being either serious or silly as the
mood strikes him, the result is that you're never quite sure what he's
going to pull out next -- although he'll usually try to make it fit the
mood of the room! And if you detect a chorus, you're welcome --
encouraged! -- to sing along.

Toyboat
Toyboat was created when Eric Coleman said to gundo "I want to do a
punk version of Banned from Argo." The punk version never
materialized, but even worse horrors have come forth. They recruited Jason
Neerenberg that very con, and then found Mike Nixon six months later.
Together they have terrorized cons all across the Midwest.
